Chapter Fifteen

After we made the decision, we didn’t waste any time. We chowed down the food and filled up two coffees to go. Then we tracked down the rental car company.

Fifteen minutes after we paid found us wandering around an enormous lot in search for the car.

It wasn’t going well.

First, Georgie dropped her phone in a puddle. After wiping it off on her shirt, she mournfully declared it to be waterlogged. “Like a water weenie,” she whined.

“We’ll get some rice. I’m sure that’s the cure,” I said, turning to walk backward in search of the lot numbers.

Georgie shoved her phone in her back pocket. “Green, right? She said the car was green.”

I was sure the clerk said stall fifteen, but we found it to be unpleasantly empty.

Two stalls down sat an impressively bright green car. I pointed the fob at it and pressed.

We both grinned at each other when the headlights flashed.

“Wonderful, incognito in Kermit the Frog style. Nice and subtle.”

“Perfect for undercover!” I laughed. We climbed inside. This time I would drive.

“Speaking of undercover, did you think of a plan yet?”

I casually shrugged, full of fake confidence. “I mean, that waitress said her brother made food deliveries. Why don’t we just pretend to be the new drivers on the route? How hard could it be?”

“You have faith in us that we’ll be able to fake it well enough to fool them?”

“You doubt our fabulous acting chops?”

“I’d never,” Georgie said, but she looked dubious. She searched for the delivery company online, the only one in the area, and announced, “Venti Deliveries, here we come.”

I mapped out the nearest Goodwill and headed over there. Promising each other we wouldn’t get caught in the rabbit trail shopping trap, we walked inside.

The brightly-lit store smelled like Oscar’s mothball closet. Straight upfront stood a mannequin dressed in lingerie, complete with a bedraggled feather boa.

I immediately perked up when I saw the t-shirts on the left wall. Georgie broke off from me. She soon returned with two black baseball caps held over her hand like a victory flag. I matched the pose, holding matching black shirts.

“We can totally fake a uniform with these.” I nodded, satisfied. “You want applesauce with those pork chops?” I laughed.

“What are you saying?”

“Just that these are perfect together.”

“And did you just laugh at your own joke? No more Brady Bunch for you.”

I grinned as we sped toward the registers. We actually made it back to the car before our coffee had completely cooled.

Our next stop was PriceMarket grocery store, where we had a brief argument if it was instant or regular rice that was the magic cure. In the end, Georgie bought the regular rice. She dropped the phone in with the bag, rolled it tight, and stuffed it under the chair. “Come on, rice, work your charms.”

“It will be fine,” I said, secretly hoping I was right.

I drove out to the gated community. Our journey there was tense, and grew tenser as the forest closed in on either side of us.
